Research and innovation development (R&I) encompasses various activities in the development of innovative products or services. There are a large number of funds that support R&I projects, categorised according to the level of technological readiness — the TRL method for assessing the maturity of technologies during the phases of a research project, from TRL 1 to TRL 9.

Proof of Concept (PoC) represents fundamental research, i.e. an in-depth analysis of an idea, testing of established hypotheses, and the technical, financial, and commercial criteria important for the success of an innovation on the market, up to a maximum level of TRL 4.

Following the fundamental research stage, the two main phases of the research cycle are industrial and experimental research into the innovation, continuing through to pre-commercialisation and the launch of the innovation on the market.
An important part of the research process is intellectual property protection, which aims to safeguard the newly created assets generated during that process.
